First you should check if your system has all the software available Coherence needs. Python 2.4, ElementTree and SOAPpy are available in portage. Twisted is also available in portage, but the current version isn't working for Coherence so you need to unmask it (add ~x86 keyword in /etc/portage/packages.keywords) before emerging. And while you're at it you can also unmask and emerge Twisted-Web because you will need it to successfully install the next package.

Divmods Nevow is now available in Portage (thanks to Florian Steinel for the hint) so we can sit back and relax while emerge is doing the job.

Louie is not available in Portage, but if you have the setuptools (dev-python/setuptools) for Python installed, you can easily fetch and install it typing easy_install Louie.

Next thing we need is ConfigObj, since March also avaiable in Portage (thanks again to FS for pointing this out) .

If you like to use the MediaRenderer and MediaServer features, you need to install two more packages: ctypes and GStreamer, both available through Portage.

Now you've installed all necessary software packages and we can go on with checking out the latest version of Coherence via SVN. As written on the coherence page, this is done by typing svn co https://coherence.beebits.net/svn/trunk Coherence. Answer all the questions with yes. A new directory has been created called Coherence. In the subdirectory bin, there is a file called coherence which is the executable that fires up the whole framework and the configured plugins. However, if you're going to start Coherence from here, it won't work, because Python won't find all the other files. You need to update the PYTHONPATH like this: export PYTHONPATH="$PYTHONPATH:/home/user/Coherence" (please note the upper case C) assuming, that you executed the svn command in /home/user. As an alternative you can cd into the Coherence directory and run Coherence using PYTHONPATH="$PYTHONPATH:$PWD" bin/coherence.
